The future of our computer desktops?

This is pretty cool stuff for any fan of low-cost, clever innovation. Using simply the remote from the already existing (and in this context, cheap!) Nintendo Wii, Johnny Lee from Carnegie Mellon University creates some interesting stuff. Like with much of this type of innovation, it’s striking how so much of it is possible through using already established technologies, simply put together in new ways.
Like with previous immersive, VR-type systems, the number one problem for usability would be to embed the physical requirements seamlessly into a working environment — as it requires a rather complex apparatus where all parts are coordinated: Wiimote, headgear/goggles, display, compatible software etc. But if integrated into one, easy-to use package, this could be pretty exciting! Wasn’t this what Windows Vista was supposed to be like?
Plus, the possibilities for game applications should be endless...

On Johnny’s page, there are more cool demonstrations of how to use the Wiimote’s sensors to create an interactive computer environment, Minority Report-style, by simply waving hands and/or fingers, and moreover, how to make impressive low-budget interactive whiteboards.
And the nicest thing is, you can actually download the software and try it with your own Wii, for free!
