The battle of threes
Hans-Holger vs. Schlomo

These two grown men are fighting each other over the rights to use the numeral “3” as trademark. Yes. You heard me. Two grown, wealthy men, fighting a legal battle over the right to use the number “3”.
In a current Swedish court case, the Swedish media conglomerate MTG, proprietor of TV channel “TV3”, is suing the mobile phone operator Hi3G for the use of the, I assume, attractive, simple and rhetorically punchy numeral “3”, which Hi3G uses as trademark for their 3G mobile network.

The CEO of the MTG media conglomerate, Hans-Holger Albrecht (who not only has a funny name but is a documented racist), has seen to focus the argumentation on the fact that Hi3G is positioning itself as a “media corporation”, something that would imply that they are operating in the same marketplace as MTG. That is, the mobile phone operator 3 cannot argue that they are only a mobile operator, and furthermore, they cannot use the number “3” because the TV channel media company TV3 used the number first.
Mobile phones are not mobile phones, they are media platforms. “3” is not a number, it’s a trademark.

Hans-Holger — man, myth, legend.
The Hi3G CEO (also with a funny name, yet not a documented racist as far as we know), Schlomo Liran, points out that the MTG media conglomerate has strong interests in putting competing mobile phone operators in trouble since the conglomerate itself incorporates one of Sweden’s biggest mobile phone operators, Tele2/Comviq.
Hmm, maybe that might have something to do with all this fuss...

Whats so funny about the name Hans-Holger Albrecht ?
1. You might be right, Hans-Hogge might not be that funny for a German or Anglosaxon.
2. But in Swedish it is: Varför har dessa snubbar alltid såna här namn? Varför kan de aldrig heta Peter Svensson eller Jörgen Jönsson?
3. This topic will be followed up soon in our forthcoming section entitled 'ridiculous yuppie names'. Keep 'em posted.

Ett svar på svenska:
H-H heter så eftersom han gör eftersom han är från Tyskland.
In Swedish, "Albrecht" gives far more posh connotations than "Andersson". And thereby nicer shareholder / media exec / cultural elite / etc credentials.
Not necessarily because it's German.
